A Pinch of German Review and Giveaway Ends April 30, 2014

DISCLOSURE:  I received a Cookbook and Package of Spice for the purpose of this review. I received no monetary compensation. All opinions expressed herein are my own and based on my own use of and experience with the item(s).

I love German cooking! From spaetzle to schnitzel to rouladen, I can eat it everyday!

When asked to review A Pinch of German Cookbook and Spices, I was delighted! I love to cook and love to eat.  Plus, I collect cookbooks! A win-win for me!

I received the Feed Your Dreams Cookbook and a package of Goulash Spice.  I chose to make the Hungarian Beef Stew (Goulash) from Page 83 of the cookbook.

I changed the ingredients a bit to suit our tastes and needs:

1 pound beef chuck, cubed
4 T Butter
4 T Goulash Spice
1 TSP Hungarian Paprika
3 cups Beef Stock
1 small can tomato paste
1 can diced tomatoes
1 T Garlic, minced
Salt and Pepper to taste

I sprinkled about 1 tablespoon of the Goulash Spice into a zippered baggie and added the beef.  Coated the meat well and then seared along with the garlic.
I added all other ingredients to the crock-pot and stirred until well mixed.  I drained and added the meat and garlic.  Cooked on low for approx. 8 hours until the meat was tender.
When the dish was done, I added hearty egg noodles and simmered for about 12 minutes until the noodles were done.

It was... FABULOUS! Very hearty, very tasty, and very satisfying!  This is real comfort food. Mike and I both loved it.  He said it will be a great dinner on a cold, wet, winter night. I agree. This is food that sticks to your ribs and soothes your soul.

The Cookbook is filled with traditional recipes collected by the author, Nathalie Porter, since childhood.  There are over 160 recipes included and several pages of colour photos of the dishes.

The recipes include: Appetizers, Dips, Stews, Salads, Vegetables, Soups, Meats, and Desserts! I've spent several hours reading and re-reading those recipes. They sound so delicious!

One of the things I really like is Nathalie's encouragement to make the recipes your own.  She knows, as does any great cook, that the best dish is the one with your own personal touch.

Throughout the cookbook are little verses and quotes designed to brighten and enlighten.

One of my favourites:

*It isn't the travel that broadening, it's all that rich foreign food!*

Truer words never spoken.

In the back of the book are Nutritional tips, USDA food guide, measurements and equivalents, food substitutions, and even Blessed Scripture!

I will be using this amazing cookbook for a very long time.  I think you will as well!

Nathalie has generously offered one of my readers to win a copy of Feed Your Dreams and a sample package of Goulash Spice! How fabulous is that?
